Opuntia santa-rita
A stunning prickly pear with deep purple to pink stems. The stems will turn a darker coloration due to environmental stresses such as cold or lack of water. This cactus is susceptible to the cochineal insect which appears as white, cottony dots on the stems. The cochineal crates a natural red dye and is often used in many food and cosmetic products today.
